PRESS RELEASE
The moment between wakefulness and sleep, when we begin to dream but have not fully fallen asleep, is called a hypnagogic state. This event manifests itself as lucid dreaming and hallucinations, or in more extreme cases, as sleep paralysis.
Our title Hypnagogia is not meant to evoke a strict interpretation of a cognitive event. Instead, we are interested in the conflation between the internal and external, what is and what is not, and the creation of dreamlike environments in the physical world. These seven artists are creating artworks that bridge a gap between what we understand and what we do not in order to build a fuller understanding of who we are.
Curated by Sarah Atwood, Abby Chambers, Erin Sigoloff and Arie Thrasher.
